This movie seemed like a less good version of the actual musical. Going into this that is what I originally thought. I really enjoyed the musical and I thought this had some potential to be better because of the cast but in my opinion it was not. I think where this move shined over the musical was the big action set pieces due to the shear number of people they had singing. I thought Hugh Jackman was the star of the movie and probably deserves to be more well known for his singing. Like some of the stuff that he has stared in singing wise is crazy. I also think that Sasha Baren Cohen did really well in this musical. I did not think that he would be that good from a musical aspect but he surprised me. I hated Russel Crowe, he seemed winy and he was not a good singer. But other than that the movie was alright. From a movie musical it was good but some things were overdramatized and it felt like it needed to be a musical. I think this movie is overhyped because of the music but the musical is ten times even though it has the same music. The camera was also kind of cool but by the end it just felt kind of mid from an audiences point of view. The climax of do you hear the people sing could have been so much better in my opinion. 6.8/10

This weekend I was feeling a little bit depressed and needed a feel good movie. I was trying to think of movies and could not really come up with something. I then thought of my childhood and of my great grandmother who would always have singing in the rain on when I would visit her house. I had never watched the movie but I knew the songs and my parents whenever we visited disney worlds hollywood studios would always make me stand on the light post with the umbrella and sing. So I sat down and watched this movie, and it is great. The mood is set in the opening scene with technicolor and the extracted set and and costumes. I found myself singing along with the songs, even the ones I did not already know. The dancing and choreography was great. There was also a lot of tap dancing. I mean like an extreme amount of tap dancing that made me not want anymore tap dancing by the end of the movie. I also thought the acting was on point. Gene Kelly ,who I sort of knew but I'm pretty sure I have never watched a movie with him, brought energy that made the movie. Also Debbie Reynolds was great in this movie and constantly reminded me of Carrie Fischer. Reynolds and Kelly's chemistry was also great. Whenever they were on screen together they stole the show. I think the best part of the movie is their relationship and I think even though it was not the main part of the plot it was easily the best part of the movie. Lina Lamont's character was also the worse. The script and the acting made me want to punch Lina Lamont in the face. I know that is not nice but that is how good they were able to make this character hateable. The big singing numbers were also spectacular and allowed you to forget that this was a movie and made you think this was some Broadway show. This film did its job when it came to distracting me from life. It reminded me of my childhood and it gave me a deeper sense of connection when it came to my great grandmother. I finally understand why this movie is constantly talked about and I agree that it is one of the greats when it comes to movie musicals. 8.0/10 I was tired and just wanted to sleep. So when I saw a new movie produced by the same people who made the Bear, on Hulu, I jumped at the opportunity to watch something that would wake me up like the show does. However, this was just the opposite. This movie was meant to be a mock-doc that takes an opposite take on movies like High School Musical were theatre kids are cool. In this movie, theatre kids are the coolest kids on the block. However, when they tired to portray theatre kids as cool they kind of missed the mark. Instead of it making fun of the idea that theatre kids are geeks it actually just made them seem very mean and sassy. This overall tone of sassiness made the movie unfunny a little bit. What I mean is that there was a great joke written about how theatre kids cant play sports, however the overall sassiness of the moment made the joke kind of fly over my head. I also think they kind of rushed the film because key characters and moments were just not talked about. One example is Ayo Edebiri whose character was not really delved into and was just there. However, I thought 1 person to standout when came to character and acting was Noah Galvin. His character probably had the most arc of anyone in the movie and showed that there is a lot of hidden talent in the world. It also kind of helped to step in his characters shows due to the overall sassiness of the theatre camp and how someone might not want to be themselves. His character I thought was also the most funny behind Jimmy Tatro's character. One person who I thought would be better in this movie is Ben Platt who is renowned actor who kind of was lack luster in this film. Besides understanding that he was stuck in his glory days there really nothing special about this character. For him being in broadway I would have assumed that he would have gotten some song or something to bring this character more alive while also utilizing Ben Platt properly. Overall, I thought this film was mid and I also think that it probably would have been better if I was not so tired. If it was like 35 minutes longer for them to build on characters and make the aundece more invested it probably would have been a better film. I think even though they had a star studded cast they fell short of what could have been an actual good movie. 4.8/10 This film is crazy. Not because the plot nor the acting but just the stuff that they did in this movie is crazy. The first thing I want to point out was Mickey Rooney whose character and acting was just objectively racist. I mean his character was not even nessacary but they just stuck him in there to make sure that the audience now that this perfectly good film would some day be controversial. Also can we talk about this cat. I could tell that animal right activist weren't a thing when they filmed this because everyone was throwing that cat all over the place. And when they forced the cat in the ran, I was just thinking there is no way that cat wanted to be there. This film in general had so many problems with it when it came to ethics and morals. This film reminds me of when my grandfather talks about something that he did as a kid that was just blatantly wrong but he says it was ok because it was another time. Ok, now that I got all of that out my system, this movie was good besides all of the stuff I just mentioned. The plot was great and creative. Also the character of Holly and Paul were kind of revolutionary for the time period in my opinion because both did not fit the gender stereotype that was normally seen in these types of movies. Granted they both somewhat fit said stereotype but the idea that Paul dated rich women for money during the 60's was unheard of. The director and the script did a very good job of showing the troubles a women had to go through during the 60's and that even though she did kinda fit the stereotype of women in movies, we were able to look deeper into the character and how she grew with these interactions. Overall, I thought this movie was good and I loved the acting of George Peppard mostly because he is in one of my favorite tv shows, the A-Team. Besides the controversial stuff, this movie really spoke to me as kind of an original rom-com. Scenes like the party at holly's house and the Tiffany's scene surprisingly had me laughing. Overall would recommend to watch, just be weary of some of the wrong choices that the director made. 7.2/10 During Lockdown we all found different ways to occupy ourselves besides watching television, playing video games, or going outside. Each of use found our own hobby. For example, during the pandemic, I learned how to bake and cook all sorts of treats and goodies. My dad started fermenting things like fruits and making sourdough bread. My mom started drawing pastel paintings of animals. My brother though probably had the most interesting hobby of all of us; he started playing Dungeons and Dragons. Of course he could not do it in person but he found online groups that he would share adventures with using his imagination and story telling skills. He invented characters that were outlandishly funny but also somewhat dark as well. My favorite is a half elfling that was an archer but who was afraid of butterflies because giant butterflies killed his whole family including his children. This fun, fantastical, and illabrate game seemed to take anybody's mind off of the pandemic and allowed my brother to go off into his own world. This movie translates this feeling of going into a ridiculously hilarious yet somewhat dark world that distracts you from your own almost perfectly. I know I spent a lot of time talking about the background of my relationship with Dungeons and Dragons but I think in order to like this movie you have to have some sort of previous relationship. From the cameos of different D&D characters to actually telling an actual game that my brother did play makes this movie a feel good story if you have played the game. It is similar to that of MArvel movies were it is a good movie if you have not read the comics however by reading the comics it allows the you as the audience to connect that much more with the film you are watching. Before I watched the film a lot of people told me it was an ok movie but when I watched it with my brother, I understood that it is an ok movie if you have never played the game but if you have played the game then you understand the characters and the feel that the movie gives. When it comes to the movie itself, I thought it was great. It reminded me of Fast Five but with a lot more jokes and taking place in a fantastical setting (This is probably due to Michelle Rodriguez playing the exact same character she does in every movie). I think the movie does not have much to bring when it comes to the technical aspect besides great CGI which was great to see since most recent films have lacked in that department. The acting is also kind of average due to Michelle Rodriguez as well as Justice's Smith horrible British accent that I felt was not nessacary at all. Who really stole the show for me when it came to acting was Rege-Jean Page. He played his role so well and surprisingly was one of the funnier characters in the movie. The way he brought action, hotness, and humor to the movie was just crazy and made me want to stop what I was doing and go watch Bridgerton. I think what really carried the movie was the storytelling and script. Like I said earlier, the film brought a sense of nostalgia to those who have played the game and kept dropping cameos from different players and creatures throughout the movie. The story itself brought sort of a dark twist on a funny story that made the movie ten times more enjoyable. Overall, I loved this movie and I think it is a perfect comedy adventure that best replicates the game into a movie. I think in the future there should definitely be more movies made to go deeper into the D&D world just so I can see some more Rege-Jean Page. Even though I never played D&D, I can tell you that after having a talk with my brother he agreed that this movie is probably means something special for someone who has played the game but can still be a good movie even if you have never played the game. Overall, I loved this movie and would highly recommend anyone watch it even if you don't know anything about D&D. 7.0/10 |
