It has been somewhat of a rough week so I wanted a feel-good film. So when I was scrolling through movies that I have not watched yet I noticed that Good Will Hunting was one of my to-do's. After talking to my mom about it, she said it would be the perfect movie to end my week of stress and applying to colleges. Honestly, when I sat down to watch this movie I did not except for me to pay attention to the film because I was pooped but the exact opposite happened. When I first saw the opening credit scene I was hooked and did not look away from my basement TV for a minute. The overall ideas and plot that the script brings like that of college education and how we measure genius as a society really hit me in a profound way. The whole dialogue and plot show these ideas constantly and what might seem like a boring concept was able to be written into a beautiful movie that had me in tears. One example of this is Robin Williams' (Sean Maguire) monologue where he tells Will that you can be a genius but still can't know everything about life. This truly was a great piece of film history that showed the power of Robin Williams as an actor but also how good the script that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote was. On that note, I just want to talk about how Robin Williams carried this film in terms of acting. Every actor was great but Robin Williams did was God level. Every time he was on the screen, you could feel what Sean Maguire was feeling. Another example of Williams great acting is when he added the most quotable line from the movie "The son of a bitch stole my line". Before this, I thought that his best performance was in either Aldin or Dead Poets Society but no, Robin Williams did a GREAT job with this role Van Sant's direction also made this movie a hit. His techniques like the slow-motion fight shots really captured the anger that Will had inside him without even really telling the audience of what happened to him in the past. The music was also great. I did not realize it till probably halfway into the movie but this soundtrack is such a great soundtrack and gives the movie more oomph. Even the last tracking shot of the car which goes into the closing credits had a profound effect on me because it showed that Will had left everything behind just like Chuckie Ben Affleck's character wanted him to. Overall this movie made my week a whole lot better. This film's main idea of being a genius and the idea of failure just touched me in a way another movie has not in a long time. This I can truly say is going to become a comfort film that might even make my top 5 list. 8.9/10
